Boscawen
An ode to Kernow

Boscawen was a brand born out of my love for Cornwalls old tin mines that stand sentinel upon the cliffs, markers
of a time gone by.

The brand is a craft rum brand based in Cornwall. The branding focuses itself around the Boscawen mine shaft which sits beneath the village of Botallack
in St Just. This particular mine is one of outstanding beauty especially when seen during cold winter months.

Characters within the word mark have been altered with 32.55° angled cross strokes, representing the main shaft
of the mine. These subtle details that are easily missed speak to the humility of Cornish miners, who would spend most of their lives hidden beneath the cliffs.

The Boscawen colour palette is monochromatic with subtle inclusions
of metallic foils used with restraint.
This intentional decision is a reminder
of the miners experience of searching the dark for tin.

Speculative Project

A unique part of this brand is the bottle. The engine house chimney is so iconic to Cornish mining, it felt right to design
a bottle that celebrates these landmarks.

Another subtle detail brought into this brand is the Boscawen-ûn Stone Circle which features as a secondary asset across the brand.

The 19 stones are depicted in a sun dial icon which you can see here being used in a seal which lives on pack.

Other applications can be similarly decorative in nature. The main role of
the stone circle mark is to bring small moments of colour into the brand.

Each bottle is merchandised within it’s own metal lunchbox, the same type that miners would carry with them.

The lunch box is industrial in it’s nature but the detailed engraving and de-boss
word mark creates a gift box that is worth keeping and can go on to function
as a working lunch box if the owner seeks to extend the lifetime of the box.
